in a hockey romance. I’ll pick a random winner on Sunday, February 10.
Back in 2006, I started working on my first novel. It was a young adult hockey romance between two high school students who revealed their crushes on each other one night while they were at the first away game of their senior year. That finally saw the light of day in 2013 as Hat Trick and over the next couple years I expanded it into a trilogy following the guys into college and eventually to their senior year.
I’m proud of the story I told. However, there were things as a newbie writer that I didn’t do right.
My big project for this year is revisiting the trilogy and not only freshening up some elements of the story but also bringing in a new voice. In the original, Simon, who goes through a coming out process as he is falling in love, told the entire story. Alex will now get equal page time so his thoughts and actions when he’s away from Simon can be seen, It’s been a blast finding Alex’s voice and either taking scenes that were once Simon’s and flipping them to Alex’s point of view or writing brand new scenes for him.
I expect the revised editions to begin releasing sometime in late 2019 or 2020. They’re already contracted with Harmony Ink Press, the young adult/new adult imprint of Dreamspinner Press. I’m excited to relaunch two of my all-time favorite characters and enhancing their story. I hope those who have already read the trilogy will enjoy the new versions while new readers discover it.
