In the last year, I’ve been lucky enough to see a game at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. The Penguins were playing Dallas, we won, which was an added bonus! PPG is HUGE… it’s probably the same size as a lot of other NHL arenas, but to me, comparing it to only ever having seen Cardiff Devils play in their (really nice, and new) arena, it was big.
There was so much history inside, photos, big names, banners, and my first look at the ice was breathtaking. I must admit I got emotional looking at the big logo in the middle, and the McDonalds logo which is Crosby’s favorite!

As I said, I’ve seen Cardiff play (v Edinburgh – Cardiff won) and the arena there is smart, newish, and holds around 3000 spectators. One half of the arena (the Edinburgh end) was quite empty, but the passion for hockey in the Cardiff end was amazing.
Last weekend I saw my local team, Milton Keynes Lightning, and I fell in love with them. They’re bottom of the table, and we lost to the team above us in the league. But, the passion in the fans, the friendliness between fans of both teams, was infectious. They may have missed the pucks a few times, but the skating was still as sexy, the moves skilled, and the MK goalie was brilliant. Not to mention he also took his top off for the raffle. Nice.
I don’t think it matters what level of hockey you’re watching, the game is still there, the passion as well.
But I must admit I’d love to go back to PPG one day…
NB – Interesting thought about the Lightnings game – there is only room on their board for two players on a team to be in the Penalty Box at the same time – what happens if it’s three that need to go off the ice on the same team! LOL…
